Numeracy Instructional Model
At MGPS, our Numeracy Instructional Model supports students to develop deep mathematical understanding and confidence across all year levels. The model follows a clear instructional sequence of Connect, Teach, Learn and Reflect, ensuring that mathematics learning is structured, purposeful and responsive to student needs.
Lessons begin with the Connect phase, where teachers activate prior knowledge, build connections to previous learning and introduce the Learning Intention, Success Criteria and key mathematical vocabulary. Opportunities for retrieval and fluency practice help strengthen students’ recall and readiness for new learning.

In the Learn phase, students apply their knowledge through independent and collaborative tasks, including targeted small-group instruction. Teachers circulate to provide support, challenge and feedback while using formative assessment to inform future planning.
Finally, the Reflect phase allows students and teachers to monitor progress, review the Learning Intentions and Success Criteria, and consolidate key understandings through discussion, comparison and exit tickets.
Throughout this process, students develop the key mathematical proficiencies of Fluency, Understanding, Problem Solving and Reasoning, enabling them to think critically, apply mathematical knowledge in meaningful ways and become confident problem solvers.
