Mathematics at Meadowglen Primary School

Our Mathematics Program

Mathematics is taught daily across all year levels at MGPS. Our approach focuses on developing strong number sense, reasoning, and problem-solving skills through hands-on and engaging learning experiences.

Students use a range of concrete materials to visualise and explore mathematical concepts, including:

  • Dice and cards
  • Counters and icy pole sticks
  • Base 10 blocks
  • Measuring tools
  • 2D and 3D shapes
  • Clocks, play money, and probability tools

Mathematics in the Classroom

Students work both independently and collaboratively on tasks aligned with clear learning intentions and success criteria. They are supported to:

  • Identify and address misconceptions
  • Compare different approaches
  • Make connections between strategies and concepts
  • Discuss, model, represent, write about, and reflect on their mathematical thinking

These experiences consolidate learning, build confidence, and develop flexibility in approaching mathematical problems.

Supporting Your Child at Home – Mathematics

Helping children with mathematics at home can be positive and enjoyable. Parents don’t need to be “good at maths” to support learning, simply fostering exploration and asking thoughtful questions encourages reasoning and problem-solving.

You can support your child by:

  • Counting everyday items such as fruit or groceries
  • Noticing numbers in the environment
  • Playing board and card games
  • Estimating totals when shopping
  • Comparing objects by size, weight, or capacity
  • Involving children in cooking and measuring ingredients
  • Using dice to practise addition, subtraction, and multiplication

Research shows that parental support is a major factor for student success, focus on thinking and having a go, not on being right or wrong!
